The Trustees are pleased to report a grant award to the The Island, York.
The Island is a York-based charity focused on improving the lives of vulnerable children and young people through personalised mentoring programmes. Their aim is to provide a safe space where children can build confidence, self-esteem, and unlock their potential through positive mentoring relationships and tailored support.
The charity offers one-to-one mentoring with trained volunteers who meet with children weekly, providing consistent support to help them develop resilience and a sense of self-worth. Group-based mentoring activities encourage social interaction and teamwork, helping participants build essential social skills. They also run alternative education programmes designed to re-engage young people with learning, offering tailored educational support to meet individual needs.
Since 2007, The Island has supported over 3,000 young people across York. Their vision is to create a dedicated space in the city, developed in collaboration with young people, where they and their partners can provide guidance and support to positively influence the lives of children and young people, regardless of their socio-economic background or life experiences.
The Island addresses unmet needs in York, helping disadvantaged, vulnerable, and isolated children and young people realise their potential through meaningful mentoring relationships and enriching activities.
