Musical Connections, York

Updated: Jun 1

The Trustees are pleased to report a grant award to Musical Connections.

Musical Connections began in 2009, with a pilot programme of weekly music-making sessions in City of York Council’s care homes for older people. The project immediately achieved a positive impact and, in 2010, won an NHS award for work in the area of mental health and wellbeing. The Council subsequently gained 2 consecutive Lottery grants to support the project, which has since expanded into sheltered housing schemes and community centres. Although the Council has been a valued project partner, Musical Connections has never been a local authority service and, in March last year, became a charity with a Board of 5 trustees, working with a small team of self-employed professional musicians.

They currently provide 8 weekly music-making sessions and 2 community choirs for vulnerable & socially  isolated older people in York.  Half the groups are in care-homes, and the other half are community-facing, with over 250 beneficiaries participating each year.
